Mystery shrouds Arrest of Syed Liyaqat Shah

After a major controversy broke out over the arrest of Hizbul terrorist Syed Liyaqat Shah, the government ordered a NIA (National Investigating Agency) probe into the incident to end all rumours and speculations and find out the truth.

Liyaqat was arrested in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh on March 20 after crossing over from Nepal border on the charges that he was planning a terror attack in Delhi with the help of an aide, who checked into a guest house in Old Delhi and left an AK-56 assault rifle, two magazines with 30 cartridges each and three hand grenades.

However, Liyaqat’s wife claimed that her husband had returned to India after he was offered a surrender & rehabilitation package from the Jammu & Kashmir government. “He returned for his deaf and dumb stepdaughter. He even sold a piece of land in Pakistan for his journey,” she said.

The Jammu & Kashmir Police too supported her claims and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah slammed the Delhi Police on this issue. Under pressure, the Union Home Ministry ordered a NIA probe to ascertain the truth. The Delhi Police still holds its ground, saying Liyaqat was involved in terror design and had wanted to launch attacks during the Holi celebrations.
