Musharraf arrested, sent on 2-day Transit Remand

Former Pakisrtan President Pervez Musharraf was today arrested by police at his farmhouse near Islamabad. He was later presented before the judicial magistrate and sent on transit remand for two days.

Islamabad High Court had ordered the former leader’s arrest on Thursday in a case relating to the imposition of Emergency rule and detaining numbers of judges including Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry in March 2007.

However, immediately after Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui revoked his pre-arrest bail and ordered police to detain him, Musharraf and his security fled from the Islamabad High Court complex and drove to his farmhouse.

Musharraf also faces several other criminal cases – including treason charges – and had been trying to stave off arrest ever since he returned.

The 69-year-old former military leader had returned last month from years of self-imposed exile hoping to lead his All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party into the general election next month.

Earlier this week, his candidacy was rejected from all the four constituencies he had applied to contest, effectively ending his ambitions for a political comeback.

Moreover, authorities have also barred him from travelling out of Pakistan.

The Pakistani Taliban have also vowed to assassinate the former president, who seized power in a 1999 coup.
