Mai – A Complete Review

TNI Bureau: ‘Mai’ is a kind of movie whose concept is as usual in Bollywood. Yet, appearance of legendary singer Asha Bhosle as well as her stupendous acting skill is the fascinating feature in the film.

‘Mai’ deals with the issue of old parents being left at the old-age by their offspring. The film presents a heart-rending tale about mother-daughter relationship, portrayed by the lead characters Asha Bhosle and her real-life niece Padmini Kolhapure as Madhu in the film.

There is nothing new in the story. Mai’s son Munna abandons her after he gets a well-paid job in the US. The two younger daughters also fall back from the responsibility of taking care of their aged mother and the eldest one, Madhu comes to her rescue.

While Madhu faces disagreement from her husband Subhash (Ram Kapoor) at the home for keeping her mother in the house, she equally faces problems in the office to adjust her duties and routine. But still she maintains a fine balance between her personal and professional life but finally forced to quit her job due to Mai’s deteriorating health.

There are several emotional moments in the film which make you weep though the film is far away from the ‘masala’ factors of Bollywood like dance, songs, foreign location, romance, action etc.

Mai uncovers the passionate relationship between a mother and a daughter. However, the gradual unfolding of events is very slow and extremely melodramatic.

Asha Bhosle is excellent in her role. She has proved that not only in singing but she is quiet good in acting too. She is simply superb throughout the film. Padmini Kolhapure has proved herself to be a fine actor and has agreeably executed her role. Ram Kapoor has also performed his job well. Anupam Kher has brilliantly conveyed the message about what is called real acting through his short appearance. Music in the film is totally unnecessary except only one song…the bindi.

The film is only for the family audience. So if you like this sort, then it becomes a must watch category for you. But one should see this for Asha Bhosle.
