The assembly polls in Karnataka will be held on May 5. Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath announced the schedule for the elections today. The counting of votes for the 224-member House will take place on May 8.
The Election Commissioner said that polls will be held in single phase on the scheduled date. Around 4.18 crore voters in the state are expected to cast their votes at 50,446 polling stations.
The issue of notification will be on April 10 and the last day of filing nomination papers will be on April 17. The scrutiny of nomination will take place on April 18 and the last day of withdrawing nomination will be April 20.
The polls will decide the fate of BJP and opposition Congress after the ruling party faced jolt in civic body polls this month. It will also test the strength of BS Yeddyurappa’s Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) and BSR Congress across central Karnataka.
