TNI Bureau: The Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre seeking explanation from the Maharashtra government over a PIL filed by a Delhi student Shreya Singhal, who had moved the apex court challenging the Section 66(A) of the Information Technology Act.
The court asked the Maharashtra government to explain why Palghar girls were arrested for comments on Facebook on the funeral day of Shiv Sena supreme Bal Thackray.
The petitioner had approached the court seeking amendment to the IT Act. Even though, the Attorney General termed the arrest of the girls was unjustified, but he advocated for the Section 66(A) of the IT Act saying it need not be scrapped.
Meanwhile, the government says that the laws for social media can be re-written. Even, BJD MP Baijayanta Panda said that he will move a private members’ bill seeking changes in the IT laws.
