TNI Bureau: Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed took refuge at the Indian High Commission in Male after an arrest warrant was issued against him for failing to appear before the court.
The whereabouts of Nasheed was revealed on social media Twitter where he posted, “Mindful of my own security and stability in the Indian Ocean, I have taken refuge at the Indian High Commission in Maldives”.
As the news was aired on web and TV channels, a large number of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters gathered outside Indian embassy in Male. Even Anti-riot police surrounded the area seeking his custody.
Nasheed sought refuge at Indian high commission after a Maldives court issued an arrest order for him. He had reportedly failed to attend a hearing in connection with the last year’s illegal detention of criminal court chief judge Abdulla Mohamed.
He was summoned to appear before the Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court on February 10. However, he stayed inside Indian embassy premises.
Nasheed, who was forced to step down at gun-point as president of Maldives last year, was on an visit to India. He went back Male on Feb 11 after his permitted travel expired on Feb 9.
