TNI Bureau: Former Indian Air Force Chief SP Tyagi came under scanner after Italian Defence Company Finmeccanica’s CEO Giuseppe Orsi was arrested in the ongoing corruption probe into the helicopter sales to Indian government.
Reports said that three cousins of SP Tyagi had allegedly influenced to change the rules in a helicopter tender. However, Tyagi denied the charges, saying no changes were made during his tenure.
He defended his cousins saying they knew nothing about the deal, which was finalised three years after his retirement. He said that no requirement was changed in the deal.
Meanwhile, the government has ordered a CBI probe into the alleged VIP chopper deal between the government and Italian defence firm Finmeccanica. Italian probe agency alleged that Giuseppe Orsi had offered bribes in India to get the contract.
The contract was signed in 2010. As per the contract, the Italian company will give 12 AgustaWestland helicopters for use by VIPs including the Prime Minister. Three helicopters have already been delivered to India in December last year.
