TNI Bureau: The DMK workers in Chennai staged a state-wide demonstrations protesting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to India. Meanwhile, MDMK general secretary Vaiko courted arrest along with 60-70 supporters while protesting against Rajapaksa on Parliament Street in Delhi.
The massive protest in Chennai was led by DMK Chief M Karunanidhi, who accused Rajapaksa of attempting to annihilate Tamils and Tamil language in Sri Lanka.
The angry protesters burnt the effigies of Rajapaksa, even lawyers boycotted courts in some parts of the state protesting his visit to India.
DMK decided to protest Rajapaksa’s visit after he ruled out greater political autonomy for Tamils in the island nation while addressing the 65th Independence Day celebrations on Monday. He had said that the ethnicity-based division was not practical and there were no racial and religious differences in Sri Lanka.
