TNI Bureau: Asia’s largest Islamic seminary, the orthodox Darul Uloom Deoband has banned the use of multimedia mobile phones on its campus to hold off the bad influence of it on the young students. The Institute authorities seized 14 handsets with internet access and cameras from the students in this connection and destroyed the same.
The authorities took the step after getting complaints that the students have been misusing the multi-media feature of the cellophanes for some morally unacceptable purposes and hence they acted upon it, reportedly intimated vice-chancellor of the institute. However, there are no restrictions for the simple phones having with no cameras or multimedia support.
Some sources in the institute also reportedly stated that, as the governing body do not have the expertise mechanism to check misuse of the gadgets described above, so they had to adopt this method to prevent abuse of the devices in this way.
When quipped about the restriction on the use of laptops in the campus, a student reportedly said that that – since there are only few students, who own a laptop, no such situation has come yet to take action against it, but if they will be found someday misusing the laptops, action will also be taken against this. He said that there were no restrictions on using of information technology, in fact, the institute itself provides free of cost internet service to the students.
However, the ban has divided the students into two groups. While the senior students support the move, the junior students think that the step will limit their exploring the modern facilities.
