The 5th ODI between India and Australia at Barabati Stadium tomorrow, may be cancelled without a ball being bowled because of incessant rains in Odisha, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. There is no let up and rain and waterlogging and the situation may continue for another 24-48 hours.
Although the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) has decided to press the choppers into service to dry out the ground once the rain recedes, but there is no such sign yet. The Ranchi ODI was also cancelled due to rains. Australia are leading the seven-match series 2-1. In all probability, the Cuttack ODI will also meet Ranchi’s fate.
The ground situation at Barabati Stadium, is not encouraging. Waterlogging has been reported from across the stadium although the main pitch is safe. The wet outfield may compound the problems further.
Both Indian and Australian teams arrived in Bhubaneswar yesterday. They are putting up at Mayfair Lagoon hotel and did not a chance to do net practice due to rains and poor weather conditions. There is huge disappointment among the cricket fans in Odisha because of the existing situation.
