Congress gets Setback in Tehri LS Bypoll

TNI Bureau: The anti-Congress mood in the country is clearly visible, as the Congress Party lost the Tehri Lok Sabha seat to the BJP, while President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee won the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat by a narrow margin.

In Uttarakhand’s Tehri, BJP’s Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah defeated Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna’s son Saket Bahuguna by a margin of 22,431 votes. Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah polled 24,52,92 votes, while Saket got 22,28,61 votes. The seat fell vacant after Vijay Bahuguna took over as the Chief Minister.

In West Bengal’s Jangipur, Congress managed to save face, thanks to the absence of Trinamool Congress. Abhijit polled 3,32,919 votes, while CPI-M candidate Muzaffar Hussain polled 3,30,383 votes. Pranab Mukherjee had won this seat in 2009 by over 1.28 lakh votes.
