Chemical Weapons Watchdog OPCW wins Nobel Peace Prize

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), a global organisation, which has been working since 1997 for the non-proliferation of chemical weapons, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2013.

The OPCW has been playing a critical role in convincing the countries to destruct existing chemical weapons and refrain from conducting such production and development. OPCW beat 16-year-old Pakistani girl, Malala Yousufzai to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

The organisation is currently monitoring the destruction of Syria’s arsenal and is hopeful of helping destroy Syria’s chemical weapons production facilities and weapons-filling equipment by November 1.

This time, the Nobel Institute in Oslo received 259 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, which included 209 individuals and 50 organisations. Even 12 nominations came from India.
