Centre identifies 58 Districts to set up Medical Colleges

J P NaddaUnion Health Minister J P Nadda said that 58 districts in 20 States and union Territories have been identified for establishment of new Medical Colleges by upgrading district/ referral hospitals, while answering to a question on Friday.

In this regard, a centrally sponsored scheme has been introduced by the centre to meet the shortfall of human resources and facilities in health sector.

The minister said that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) submitted by the State/UTs are required to be evaluated by a Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) before they are approved by the Empowered Committee (EC). Implementation is to be carried out by the respective States/UTs.

As per data presented in the house, total 25 medical colleges were set up during 2013-14. Out of total, 13 were government medical colleges and 12 were private colleges. In 2014-15, total 17 medical colleges were established out of which 7 government and 10 private medical colleges.  Similarly, during 2015-16, 18 medical colleges were established in India – 11 government and 7 private medical colleges.
