Notwithstanding the data and revenue model, the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has become a No-No for people in Odisha, who are deeply upset with its broadband service. Be it normal cable or FTTH, BSNL has failed its customers across the state. Forget about rural areas, situation has gone from bad to worse even in the capital city Bhubaneswar.

Poor customer service, lack of intent to resolve the issues, inefficient staff and uncooperative SDOs and JTOs, who don’t even pick up the customers’ calls and behave in a rude manner if nailed, have added woes to the consumers’ plight. People are leaving BSNL Broadband in large numbers to go for private operators such as WeFe, JetSpot etc.

While PM Modi is leaving no stones unturned to boost his Digital India campaign, the BSNL has turned out to be a big disappointment. It is being alleged that top BSNL officials are knowingly playing into the hands of private operators, giving a jolt to the company’s credibility.

In rural areas, people hardly get uninterrupted broadband service. As credible private operators have not penetrated into rural areas yet, BSNL officials take advantage of the situation and leave them in the lurch. There have been reports of delay in repairing work by days and weeks in many cases. As long as PM Modi does not listen to people’s voice and handle the BSNL crisis effectively, Digital India will remains a distant dream in Odisha.

With a lot of hard work and riding high on CM Naveen Patnaik’s popularity, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won maximum seats in Nabarangpur-Malkangiri belt in 2014 polls. Even, Pradeep Majhi suffered a shock defeat in Lok Sabha polls to a political novice like Balabhadra Majhi. The Congress was down and out in this tribal belt.

However, Pradeep did not give in and shot into limelight again by playing the ‘tribal’ or ‘adivasi’ card. Pradeep Majhi rattled and unsettled the government by doing recent agitation over Forest Rights Act (FRA), demanding land patta for tribals, leading the attack on forest office in Raighar, subsequent arrest and launching a six-day hunger strike inside Umerkote jail.

In a desperate bid to checkmate Pradeep’s march and silence him, his family was dragged into chit fund fire. Although it’s crystal clear that they did maize business with Seashore Group like all others and never acted as chit fund agents in the area, some vested interests have launched a tirade against them.

Different angles are being attached to this case to tighten the noose around Pradeep and his family. But, will it work? If the government fails to prove any charges, then their campaign would backfire and Pradeep would aggressively use the tribal card to project himself a martyr and derive political mileage from this controversy.

Earlier, the government asked all departments to accelerate all-round development of Nabarangpur district with the CM taking special interest. It clearly shows that the government is nervous and does not want to leave any stones unturned to make its presence felt in the district.

Some leading newspapers in Odisha have launched a tirade against Viacom18, which has produced the movie, ‘Budhia Singh: Born to Run’ and accused it of hijacking/abducting the running sensation for the promotion of their movie. But, the question remains who really bothered for Budhia Singh over the last few years?

After the brutal murder of Budhia’s coach and mentor Biranchi Das in 2008, Budhia was left in the lurch. Rather, his talent was “hijacked” by the government itself. Although he was put into the sports hostel, he was deprived of what he was getting earlier – whether it’s proper food, facilities or freedom to choose his distance/event.

Budhia shot into a fame as a marathon runner, but he was asked to run for short distance. His talent went in waste. He felt suffocated. But, neither the government nor these media houses bothered to raise voice for him. Today, some people are shedding crocodile tears just because of business interests.

We must appreciate Viacom18 for giving the benefits to Budhia, which he did not get from our own people. Commercial interest is not a sin; so, why single out Viacom18 for this? Let Budhia choose his own destiny. Nobody can dictate the terms.

The big buzz in Delhi, Punjab, Goa, Gujarat notwithstanding, the Aam Aadmi Party has time and again proved beyond doubt that political novices will pose a bigger threat to the nation than the external forces, who can be easily dealt with by the armed forces. Bhagwant Mann showed they are not yet fit for national politics.

The way AAP MP from Sangrur (Punjab), Bhagwant Mann filmed the sensitive locations and routes inside the Parliament and posted it on Facebook, it has shocked the nation. What’s more shocking was the defiance of Mann and silence of other AAP leaders, while cadres hailed him for bringing the secret out.

Be it a call for plebiscite in Kashmir or joining the cause of separatists and Maoists, the Aam Aadmi Party has shown they are yet to understand the meaning of national security – whether internal or external. The Mann episode just an eye-opener. It’s up to the people to judge them and their thoughts/ideology.

Just a day after Supreme Court asked Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi to apologise for his ‘RSS killed Gandhi’ remark or face trial, the nation witnessed condemnation of another politician, Dayashankar Singh, who was also the Vice President of Uttar Pradesh BJP. Dayashankar was sacked from the post and suspended from the party for 6 years for calling BSP supremo Mayawati ‘worse than a prostitute’.

While BSP and other opposition parties used the occasion to target the BJP across the country, the incident has a hidden message for the political class. Never cross the forbidden line and exercise restraint in your speech. We know what type of adjectives were used against PM Modi in the past and how Sonia Gandhi was subjected to abuse in public platforms. Even, both Modi and Sonia were accused of using words that did not suit the leaders of their stature.

And, we have Arvind Kejriwal, the elected CM of Delhi, who called the PM a ‘Psychopath and Coward’ on Twitter and never expressed regret for his slur. He also endorsed his colleague Kapil Mishra’s tweet, which termed the PM an ‘ISI Agent’.

The politicians use slang and abuse against their rivals and then escape without any punishment. Dayashankar Singh’s case should serve an eye opener for all. Hope good sense prevails and they engage in healthy debates and discussion without hitting below the belt.

Whenever we think about malnourishment and death of infants and children, African countries such as Somalia and Rwanda come to our mind. Not even in wildest dreams we thought about India, forget about Odisha. But, Nagada in Jajpur district forced us to bow our heads in shame today.

We boast about development and growth in our state. But, we never realised we have an inaccessible village called Nagada, which is yet to taste any piece of development. We had to wait for the death of 19 children to get a glimpse of Nagada and its horrible sight.

Kudos to the media, which dared to highlight Nagada instead of focusing more on Motilal, Papu Pom Pom and casting couch syndrome. But, the job is half done. The administration is still struggling to bring the villagers into mainstream and improve their living condition.

Now, we need to believe that Nagada is not lone exception. We may have many more Nagadas, which the government has not heard of. The media must play a proactive role to discover such hamlets and inaccessible regions that are still awaiting to see development.

It has now become a habit of many politicians, including Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal to level allegations and then run away, which is known as ‘spit and run’ politics. But, the Supreme Court’s observation in ‘Rahul vs RSS’ case will serve as an eye-opener for the entire political class.

The Supreme Court took strong exception to Rahul Gandhi’s allegations that ‘RSS killed Gandhi’, asking him either to apologise or face trial. Well, the political compulsion will force Rahul not to apologise and fight a losing battle with the help of his battery of lawyers, including Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi. But, the message is loud and clear.

As observed by the Supreme Court, it was unfair on the part of Rahul Gandhi to blame an entire organisation without any evidences. The political parties and their leaders must exercise restraint while speaking on public platforms. They must weigh their words and statements carefully before they speak if they take the judiciary seriously.

When he was playing cricket, he packed his bags, walked out of the England tour and returned to India due to differences with then captain Mohd. Azharuddin. And, today, he not only snubbed the BJP, but also the President of India, who nominated him to Rajya Sabha three months ago.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is known as an unpredictable person, quit Rajya Sabha after being denied a Ministerial berth in the recent Cabinet reshuffle. If we believe the sources, he has been offered the post of Campaign Chief of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab and will be made CM if the party comes to power.

Sidhu and his wife have been in touch with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for a long time. On April 1, 2016, his wife, a MLA herself, had announced her resignation from the party on Facebook, but made a retreat later. BJP tried to woo Sidhu by nominating him to Rajya Sabha. But, that was not enough.

Sidhu knows AAP has a great chance of coming to power in Punjab, but lacks a strong local face to lead the party. He wants to fill up that vacuum. A CM’s post definitely looks lucrative. But, can he accept the AAP ideology he rejected not long ago? It would be interesting to see how Kejriwal handles Sidhu, who only listens to himself.

The crisis in Arunachal Pradesh and subsequent verdict by the Supreme Court, were used by the critics to slam BJP and PM Narendra Modi, saying democracy was murdered in the state. But, today’s development within the Congress has proved it otherwise.

When the majority of Congress MLAs in Arunachal Pradesh revolted in December 2015, their lone demand was the ouster of Nabam Tuki, who was seen as an unpopular leader in the state. Kalikho Pul led the revolt with 21 MLAs and ran a parallel assembly session. As the minority government led by Tuki ruled Arunachal, the Governor intervened and recommended President’s Rule. Pul formed the government with the help of 11 BJP MLAs.

After SC restored the Congress Government led by Tuki, the party leadership, which earlier refused to give in to the rebels, had to eat humble pie and go down on their knee to bring them back.

The rebels had one point agenda – ouster of Tuki. And, Congress leadership had to drop him. However, instead of Kalikho Pul, late CM Dorjee Khandu’s son Pema Khandu was elected leader of the CLP and all MLAs backed him. Had the Congress High Command acknowledged the rebels’ demand in December 2015, the crisis would have been averted long ago. Congress may feel relieved today. But, they never know when the crisis would strike them again unless they change their approach.

The mainstream media has been biased of reporting issues that are not related to peace and development and often accused of targeting a group or individuals based on their preferences. The advent of social media played a key role in busting and exposing all propaganda and it was believed that it would replace the media as a reliable and authentic medium. But, is it happening?

The social media is getting very powerful in today’s digital world. Be it Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp, they help in spreading awareness and reporting fast news. At the same time, we are getting disturbing trends of photo shopped images, false news, slanderous campaign etc. on social media, which the mainstream media won’t dare to do, as they are regulated and accountable.

Attacks and counter attacks have become the new fashion on social media platforms. Bulldozing others’ views, attacking them with slang, abuses and threats, trolling them hard, indulging in name calling, were not part of the concept that led to the rise of social media. Some vested interests now disturbing peace and harmony – whether social or religious, using these tools.

While political parties and their fans take the lead to spread hatred, communal frenzy and maligning campaigns, even senior journalists add fuel to the fire by their insensitive and biased reporting. Where we are heading? When it will stop? We never know…
