TNI Bureau: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee landed in a fresh trouble for her comments against the judiciary on the day before Independence Day. A section of lawyers have moved the Calcutta High Court against her.
The high court admitted the suo motu contempt petition against Mamata. The court took the cognizance of the case against her directing the petitioner to explain the basis of his complaint.
The media houses were also asked to file affidavits confirming the veracity of their reports that Mamata spoke on corruption in judiciary. The court will review all these and then decide whether to file a contempt of court case against Mamata for her remarks.
Mamata had dragged the attention of the lawyers, oppositions and allies when she said during a function in the state assembly that several court judgments have been delivered for money.
She had said, “at times, favourable verdicts are given in return for money. There are instances when judgments have been purchased. There is corruption among a section of the judiciary. I know there can be a case against me for saying this. But this must be said and I am ready to go to jail for saying so.”
The petitioner Bikash Bhattacharya had submitted the material published by two newspapers and two TV channels on the speech by Mamata against judiciary.
While Congress accused the TMC chief of violating constitutional principles, the BJP termed the comments as irresponsible. The CPM said that the statement as a “pressure tactic”.
