BJP sweeps Civic Polls in Gujarat

Date:

TNI Bureau: After Gujarat assembly polls, Narendra Modi-led BJP swept local polls in the state, showing the saffron party’s dominance with the victory of Muslim candidates. The BJP won 47 of 75 municipal corporations across the state.

Modi, who has been drawing flak from Congress for his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots, made his opposition dumb as the party had fielded most of the Muslim candidates for the polls in Salaya municipality in the Jamnagar district of Saurashtra.

The BJP had fielded 24 Muslim candidates and all won the polls held on Sunday. The Congress, which had been ruling the town for decades, could not win a single seat in the district where 90% Muslim people are living.

Modi was highly criticised for not fielding a single Muslim candidate in the assembly elections and Congress was questioning on his secularism. However, the recent local polls will not allow the Congress to speak anything against Modi, who is fighting the polls on the basis of “P2G2” – pro-people good governance.
