TNI Bureau: Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal starrer ‘OMG Oh My God!’ that was released on 28th September is a totally different film in lieu of its subject. Of course, Umesh Shukla-directed film is an adaptation of the 2001 Australian comedy ‘The Man Who Sued God’ and the Gujarati play ‘Kanji Virudh Kanji’ by Bhavesh Mandalia, but still it bears the taste of originality thanks to the outstanding performance by Paresh Rawal and Akki.
Paresh Rawal, in the character Kanji Bhai literally does not leave any stone unturned to make reach the unusual script to the zenith. Kanji is a hardcore atheist and a shrewd businessman who sells idols of God as antique. But the most interesting point is that – he files a case even against the God in a human court of law.
The story is all about an antique shopkeeper who finally takes God to court when his shop is destroyed by an earthquake. On a funereal trip to Hardwar, organized by Kanji’s neighbor to pacify the departed soul of his mother, Kanji makes sure he turns the trip into a profitable venture.
But when he returns back a natural calamity throws the atheist out of even bread and butter and in a fit of rage the man sues God.
And then the modern version of Lord Krishna appears. Akshaya Kumar plays the role of Lord Krishna who descends on the earth to meet the man who dared to launch a case against the God for compensation.
Through a comedy drama, the movie wants to convey a social message, but the theme may not be accepted by the current God men of the country. But as a work of art the film of course deserves to be commended.
The message becomes more controversial in a country like India where a bigger section of the people is God-fearing and should not want to see the almighty in a compromised avatar.
The forceful dialogues of the film are the strongest point of this movie. And adding to that presence of Paresh Rawal, who is a veteran of comedy and knows it well, how to play with the dialogues, makes the film much more interesting.
Besides Akki and Paresh, Govind Namdeo and Mithun Chakraborty are also at the top of their acting.
‘Go Govinda’, Prabhu Deva and Sonakshi Sinha’s special number which had actually grabbed attention for the film before release is also very good and seems to be the top seller during ‘Janmastami’.
Coming to music, Himesh Reshammiya and others composed songs are quiet melodious. “Go Govinda”, sung by Aman Triikha and shreya Ghoshal is a smash hit. Kailash Kher’s ‘Dhoondta hai’ is an extremely melodious track.
The film condemns the subject of organized religion in its current form.
Our rating for the film is 3 and half stars out of 5.
