Abul Salem attacked in Taloja Jail in Mumbai

Gangster Abu Salem was attacked inside the Taloja Central Jail in Navi Mumbai on Thursday night. Police confirmed the report after he was taken to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Hospital in Vashi. The incident raises the question of safety and security of the prisoners in the jail.

Salem sustained a minor injury on his hand after an inmate fired at him around 8.30 pm on Thursday. As the injury was not serious, he was brought back to the jail today. He was attacked by Devendra Jagtap, a sharpshooter, who was arrested in connection with the murder case of an advocate named Shahid Azmi. The question arises, how the gun was sneaked into the jail premises despite tight security.

Salem is the accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case in which 257 people were killed and more than 700 were injured. He was arrested in Lisbon in 2002 along with his girlfriend Monica Bedi (Bollywood actress) for travelling with fake passports. He was extradited from Portugal in 2005 for his alleged involvement in the Mumbai serial blasts.

According to the latest reports, his lawyer will file a plea in the session court in Mumbai seeking his repatriation to Portugal citing safety concerns. The incident took place after an altercation between the two Salem and Jagtap over some business issue. The question arises how the target was missed despite firing from a close range. As per the rumours doing the rounds, it was a pre-planned attack to seek repatriation to Portugal.
