At least 10 people were killed in the wee hours of Thursday when a ‘Tavera’ vehicle met an accident in Yogimunda, near Harishankar in Balangir district. The vehicle collided with a road side tree after losing balance, killing 9 persons on the spot including the driver, two children and two women and injuring 9 persons.
The wedding party members were returning from Khujenpali, 5 kms away from Balangir town and the vehicle met the tragic accident at Yogimunda, under Khaprakhol block, about 70 kms from the Dist Head Quarter in Balangir District.
The injured persons were immediately shifted to Patnagarh Hospital but as their condition deteriorated, they were again shifted to the VSS Medical College Burla. Another passenger succumbed to the injuries in Patnagarh hospital rising the death toll to 10. All victims belong to Khaprakhol area as per reports.
Police said that the bodies will be handed over to the family members after post mortem. It was the second mishap in Balangir District in this week. Earlier on 24th May, five persons were charred in Puintala, 2 kms away from Balangir, when an OSRTC bus caught fire after being hit with a road side tree.
Point to be noted that, while the seating capacity of a Tavera is 9, the vehicle was packed with 19 people including women and children.
