RSS Chief: Rapes happen in India, not Bharat

TNI Bureau: While the entire country is shocked and outraged over the 23-year-old para-medical student and the government is facing criticism from all ends, remarks by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat sparked a controversy.

The brutal incident that triggered revolution against the administration and government demanding the safety of women could not be able to change the mindset of RSS. The Sangh could be highly criticised after Bhagwat said that rapes happen in India, not in Bharat. Indicating the western culture in India that was the reason behind the increasing number of brutal crimes, he meant to say that the rapes happen in cities not in rural areas.

However, the remarks could put BJP in trouble when the students, women organisations and most of the political parties are demanding the death penalty for the rapists and implement strong laws to control the rape/gangrape cases.

Bhagwat’s statements came after BJP MP Kailash Vijayvargiya said that women should stay within their limits. Quoting the epic Ramayana, he said if the women cross their limits, they will pay the price just like Sita was abducted by Ravan.

“Ek hi shabd hai – Maryada. Maryada ka ulanghan hota hai, toh Sita-haran ho jata hai. Laxman-rekha har vyakti ki khichi gayi hai. Us Laxman-rekha ko koi bhi par karega, toh Ravan samne baitha hai, woh Sita-haran karke le jayega. (One has to abide by certain moral limits. If you cross this limit you will be punished, just like Sita was abducted by Ravana),” Vijayvargiya had said.

While the students at Jantar Mantar are protesting against women crime in the city, the women groups are debating over the dressing style of the girls, such type of remarks from Sangh Parivar would definitely a disappointing.
