PM files Nomination for Re-election to Rajya Sabha
The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today filed his nomination papers for his fifth Rajya Sabha term from Assam.
The Prime Minister’s Upper House term expires on June 14 and polls for two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam will be held on May 30.
Singh was accompanied by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh, Assam Pradesh Congress President Bhubaneswar Kalita and Ministers Pradyut Bordoloi, Rakibul Hussain, Neelmani Sen Deka and Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Manmohan Singh has been representing Assam in the upper house since 1991 after he became the Union Finance Minister. He is expected to win comfortably this time too as the Congress and its allies occupy 94 berths in the 126-member Assembly.
“I have been an MP from Assam for 21 years. I shall endeavour to accelerate the development of Assam so that poverty and diseases are eliminated from the state in the next 10 years”, Singh said after filing his nomination.
