Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was in a Chandigarh hospital after being attacked by a fellow inmate in a Jammu’s Kot Bhalwal jail last week, died on Thursday morning.

“Sanaullah was declared dead around 7 am due to multiple organ failure. The team of doctors headed by YK Batra tried their best to revive him,” a spokesperson of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said.

Sanuallah, a resident of Sialkot in Pakistan, was serving a life term after being convicted under TADA provisions. He was arrested in 1996 and charged with involvement in a bomb blast at Katra near the Hindu shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in 1994 which left 10 people dead.

The attack on Sanuallah took place on Friday, a day after Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh succumbed to grievous injuries following a murderous assault in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The Pakistani was flown from Jammu to Chandigarh for treatment. On Tuesday, two members of Saunallah’s family – brother-in-law Mohammed Sehzaad and nephew Mohammed Asif – visited him in Chandigarh hospital.

According to Government report, there were 535 Indian prisoners, including 483 fishermen, in Pakistani jails and 272 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails. However, the death of Sarabjit Singh and Sanaullah Ranjay could become a diplomatic issue between the two neighbouring countries.
