Movie Review: Chennai Express

Shahrukh-Deepika starrer ‘Chennai Express’ is a typical Bollywood-masala film with trademark directorial style of Rohit Shetty. The movie is a complete crowd entertainer rich with big star cast, drama, romance, action, comedy, songs etc. But yes, this movie is not the cup of tea for those who love to vote for a classic story. This is a light-hearted movie.

jPlot – Rahul (Shahrukh) is a North Indian bachelor who stays with his grandparents in Mumbai. He couldn’t get married owing to his over-loving and over possessive Grandfather who cannot live without him. Once he gets on a journey to Tamil Nadu to fulfil the last wish of his grandfather: to have his ashes immersed in the Holy water of Rameshwaram. On the journey, he meets Meena (Deepika Padukone), who hails from a unique family of a small village called Komban village in South India. She is fondly referred to as Meenamma by her loved ones. As the two characters find love through this journey an unforeseen constrain awaits them. Loving the girl the North Indian guy realises the power of true love.

Review – The Shetty-Khan joint venture has all the ingredients of a masala Bollywood film like – Big stars like Badshah of Bollywood Shahrukh and Deepika Padukone, who has already give two blockbusters this year and drama, action, comedy, lavish song sequences, the car chases and a memorable climax. Every scene bears the signature style of Rohit Shetty.

The beautiful and breath-taking aerial views of mountains, rivers and sea that the film offers when enters to South India is a big treat by Shetty to the audience. This is the most picturesque film Shetty has offered.

Interestingly, the film delivers exactly the same thing that one expects from a Rohit Shetty film: hardcore entertainment.

Tamil is used in the film at many places, which should create problem for the non-Tamil spoken audience, but in the film itself Deepika Padukone’s character offers translation of most of those dialogues and the rest can be guessed from the pictures.

Performance – Shahrukh is a complete package with action, dance, comedy and many more entertaining elements. After a long gap he has returned to his real genre, romance. But yes this story is not like that of ‘Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai’ or ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ but this one is a crowd pleasing romantic approach from the King Khan of Bollywood.

Deepika delivers yet another fantastic performance. She looks lovely and stays in character throughout and beautifully fits to her co-star’s energy and enthusiasm in every variety of sequences.

The ‘Lungi’ song is a real happy moment during the film.

The Rs. 800 million budget film has received a hyped start up at the box office and expected to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark soon.

New thing about the story is that while contemporary Bollywood films mostly deal with topics on Punjab and other north Indian states, ‘Chennai Express’ revolves around south India and the film successfully executes the concept.

Verdict – If you are either a fan of Rohit Shetty style, Shahrukh or Bollywood Masala film, then the movie will rock you. Lest if you love to watch some other style, the movie may not entertain you.
