Jayalalithaa launches ‘Amma’ Mineral Water

In a series of pro-people measures implemented by the Jayalalithaa government in Tamil Nadu, another scheme was launched to provide safe drinking water at low cost for poor and middle-class people in the state.

JayalalithaaTamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated ‘Amma Drinking Water’ plant through a video conferencing from the state Secretariat on Sunday. The plant has been set up by the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) through the Institute of Road Transport (IRT) on 2.47 acres of land at the premises of the IRT at Gummidipoondy. It has capacity to produce three lakh litres of water a day.

The mineral water will be available at Rs 10 a bottle (1 litre) with the name ‘Amma’, (symbolises Jayalalithaa). This is the latest measure announced by the AIADMK government for poor people to provide mineral water at affordable price.

It can be noted that Jayalalithaa has been launching several welfare schemes to woo poor and middle classes since she came to power in 2011 assembly elections. Recently, she had inaugurated ‘Amma Canteens’ that offer tiffin, lunch and dinner at highly subsidised rates.
