India at Olympics 2012: July 31, Boxers Shine

TNI Bureau: After a series of disappointments in various sports yesterday, India had some reasons to cheer in Boxing. The Indian Boxers Devendro Singh and Manoj Kumar brought cheer to the Indian camp with spectacular victories.

In Lawn Tennis, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna disappointed, as they crashed out in the second round. In Archery, all Indian archers barring Deepika Kumari are out of the medal race.

Archery: Woman Archer Chekrovolu Swuro lost to Jennifer Nichols 5-6 in a tough battle. Archer Rahul Banerjee won 6-0 against Janstan Gantugs of Mongolia. However, he lost 3-7 to Rafael Dobrowlski of Poland in the second round.

India’s Tarundeep Rai and Jayant Talukdar crashed out of the medal race. Talukdar lost to American rival Jacob Wukie 0-6. Tarundeep won the first round match against Juan Carlos Stevens of Cuba. But, he lost to Bubmin Kim of Republic of Korea in the next round.

Badminton: Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa defeated SM Sari and L Yao of Singapore 21-16, 21-15 in the last group match, but despite the second consecutive win, they failed to move to the quarterfinals by a single point.

Parupalli Kashyap entered the pre-quarterfinals of the men’s singles badminton with a 21-9, 21-14 victory over Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam. In mixed doubles, Jwala Gutta and V Diju lost 21-15, 21-15 to South Korea’s Lee-Ha – their third loss in a row.

Judo: Garima Chaudhary was knocked out in just 90 seconds by Japanese Yoshie Ueno in the opening round.

Rowing: Manjeet Singh and Sandeep Kumar finished sixth in the lightweight double sculls repechag. Rower Swarn Singh crashed out of the medal race after losing out in the quarterfinal stage.

Weightlifting: India’s lone male lifter K Ravi Kumar crashed out in the 69kg category with below-par performance. He lifted 303 kg in total. Ravi was placed sixth in Group B.

Lawn Tennis: Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna crashed out of the men’s doubles. They lost to Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet of France 3-6, 4-6 in the second round.

Boxing: Devendro Singh demolished Bayron Molina Figueroa of Honduras in just 2.64 minutes in the opening round of light flyweight (49kg). The referee stopped the bout when Devendro was leading 24-2. Manoj Kumar defeated Serdar Hudayberdiyev of Turkmenistan 13-7 to move to the pre-quarterfinals of the men’s light welter (64 kg) category.
