Democracy under Attack, Panchayat Members resign in J&K
TNI Bureau: After a 70-year-old Sarpanch Habibullah Mir was killed and another woman panchayat member Zoonaa Begum was shot and injured, around 20 Sarpanches and Panch members tendered their resignation to Chief Minister Umar Abdullah.
The panchayat representives feared for their lives in the wake of the threats issued by the militants. They blamed the state government for failing to protect them.
Panchayat members in Kashmir have been demanding adequate security since the attacks took place on them last year. However, the Umar Abdullah government has miserably failed to address their concerns.
