TNI Bureau: Justice Verma Committee, which was set up to review the laws for sexual crimes against women, submitted his report to the government, praising the young people, who demanded justice for the Delhi gangrape victim.

“Young people are the real hope,” Justice JS Verma said. He said that country’s youth have taught the older generation by fighting for the gangrape victim, who died in Singapore after battling for life.

However, he slammed the Delhi police saying, “I was shocked that the Police Commissioner got a pat on the back by the Home Secretary. I was so shocked. The least I would have done was to seek an apology for the failure of my duty to protect citizens”.

He said that police proved that they have no interest to bring reforms in police as the senior officers like Director Generals of Police (DGP) did not respond to his committee’s queries.

He said that the failure of good governance allowed the brutal crime to take place in the country.

The review of existing laws was completed and submitted its report within 30 days. Justice Verma said that the report was prepared after receiving 80,000 suggestions from India and abroad.

He suggested that the government should take same time period to implement strong laws to check crime against women. He suggested the time-bound trial in sexual assault cases to punish the accused.

He focused on the governance not new laws. He said the apex court order on police reforms is not implemented yet, which is a major drawback of the government. He suggested that the sexual assault cases should be tried by women judge. Condemning the police, he said that police should apologise if they could not protect people.
