TNI BUreau: The battle between veteran theatre personality Girish Karnad and Nobel laureate writer V.S. Naipaul worsened after the writer was called ‘anti-Muslim’, which created a buzz in media. Even Activist-artist group SAHMAT came out in support of Girish Karnad over his controversial remark.

Karnad had dared to slam Naipaul, who was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mumbai Literature Festival. The decision was opposed by the TV and cine personality.

Karnad has a reason to condemn him as the writer his non-fiction book ‘India: A Wounded Civilisation’ has never missed a chance to accuse them (Indian Muslims) of having savaged India for five centuries, brought, among other dreadful things, poverty into it, and destroyed glorious Indian culture.

Karnad did not question Naipaul’s position in Indian literature, but he asked why the prestigious award was conferred to the writer and on the basis of what he was nominated for the honor.

He claimed, while history says something different on Indian civilisation, the writer has written in his book ‘India: A Wounded Civilisation’ that the Muslims were responsible for destroying Hindu culture.
