Assam Riots Toll rises to 32, 1.7 Lakh rendered Homeless

TNI Bureau: The situation in Assam deteriorated further, as the death toll in that state has reached 32 now. Over 1.7 lakh people have been rendered homeless and living in relief camps.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has failed to give an assurance that the riots would stop and said such things have been continuing since ages. The Assam Police and political leadership have failed to rise to the occasion to prevent the clashes.

The communal riots in the Bodoland Territorial Administered Districts have shocked the nation. The Guwahati-bound Rajdhani Express was stopped and damaged at Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district. However, no injuries or casualties were reported.

Sporadic incidents of violence and arson were reported from different parts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts. Bongaigaon and Udalguri districts have also seen tense situaion.

Indefinite curfew continues in Kokrajhar while night curfew will continue in Dhubri and Chirang districts. The ethnic violence in Assam is decades old, but things have gone beyond control this time.
